The making of Practice at the Garden, Part 1
When you are seeing something, what is it you are wanting to see?
When I set up an experiment, what do I want to make happen and see?
I don’t know.
Setting up the experiment of bringing dancers to a garden space and film, is almost an exercise to remind myself that one can curiously stare and let the thing develop before beginning to find connections, to understand.
I invited Théïa and Yasmine to the Story Garden, where I work as a movement facilitator, and my idea was really to just see dancers in a garden. I wanted to see my dancers-friends seeing what I see, I wanted to see what they saw, and I maybe I wanted to understand what is it, or how is it that we might be having a similar perception of this space.
Seeing it through movement, patterns and rhythms. Bodies. Seeing people and seeing the relationships between the whole.
Does being dancers provide us with a similar way of perceiving? That was my initial premise.
Perceiving.
Seeing.
Responding to the question of ‘who are you? what are you doing here?’
Perceiving.
Seeing.
Being curious.
Being barefoot.
Stepping slowly and steeping strong.
Reaching up and reaching for the snacks. That’s part of being at a garden.
